The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

Kaiser Wilhelm II ordered the construction of the church in honor of his grandfather Kaiser Wilhelm in 1895 by the architect Franz Schwechten in the Romanesque Revival style. In 1943, during the bombing of Berlin it was badly damaged. After the end of World War II, a tender was held in which architects were able to submit proposals for the reconstruction of the destroyed building. Egon Eiermann won the tender, but had to change his design. The Berlin wanted to preserve their "hollow tooth" in memory of the devastation and suffering of war. So Eiermann arranged a new church, a foyer, a tower and a chapel to be build around the ruins of the former church. Since 1987 it is possible to visit the ruins.
