The capital in marathon fever
The preparations for the biggest running event of the year start already days before the main event. The street “Strasse des 17. Juni”, where the start and finish point of the route lies, is converted and many street food stall are set up. The whole city is in a marathon fever. The atmosphere is unique and contagious. But the excitement is justified, because over the years the Berlin Marathon has become one of the most important sports events for runners and spectators. The 42.195-kilometer route is supposedly the fastest in the world. Already six world records have been achieved on the capital city route. The fastest marathon runners also have reached all their top results in Berlin. The three top runners are the Kenyans Patrick Makau Musyoki, Wilson Kipsang and Dennis Kimmetto. Kimmetto even managed to complete the Berlin Marathon in a time of 2:02:57 in 2014, thus entering the history books as the first athlete ever to be faster than two hours and three minutes.
The Berlin marathon is even for not so ambitious runners an excellent place. The route passes many sights of the city. Victory Column, TV Tower and Gendarmenmarkt are just a few of the highlights along the track. An absolute great experience is certainly the finish through the famous Brandenburg Gate.
Early practice - even at the marathon. The marathon weekend will start with the 4.2195km minimarathon for children and teenagers on Saturday. The route of the “future” running stars leads through the Berlin Tiergarten. Following that; running shoes will be changed for inline skaters to complete the full distance. Countless recreational and professional athletes roll through the streets of Berlin to put their skills and their fitness to the test. Wheelchair users and hand bikers get their turn Sunday morning before the actual Berlin Marathon starts.
