Since 1996 the district Berlin Kreuzberg presents over the Pentecost bank holidays the Carnival of Cultures. The heart of this four day event is the multicultural festival on the Bluecherplatz (Bluecher square). Next to musical performances of various kinds, you can find food and drink stalls there too. The highlight is the carnival parade on Sunday, with its South American flair. Enjoy the atmosphere with dance and lots of music.
Carnival of Cultures in Berlin as a symbol of tolerance
The idea for this event came from the workshop of the cultures, which was launched in the multi-nation district Kreuzberg in 1993. The carnival was to be used as an demonstration of peace and colour, the idea of a tolerant and open society. It began in 1996 with 2,000 participants and 50,000 visitors, and soon developed into one of the largest events of its kind in Europe. Nowadays more than 4,000 participants and far more than a million visitors attend the spectacle. Since 2000 the most beautiful displays and costumes are awarded. In addition to the carnival parade through Kreuzberg, a festival on the Bluecherplatz with music from around the world is an integral part of the Carnival of Cultures.
