East Side Gallery

The East Side Gallery is one of the most important monuments of the Berlin Wall and its history.

The gallery was created for the first time in 1990 during a project where over 100 artists took part. The artist from more than 20 countries had traveled around the world.

The wall itself stands since 1961. It is a secondary wall behind the actual border line/main wall. Since it was not allowed in the GDR to paint any parts of the wall, it gave the whole area of the East Side a clean surface.

After 1989 - the entire Berlin Wall was almost torn down - only this part was preserved in its original. The artists have provided the wall with images of peace and freedom. Some famous images are the brother kiss, the Trabi and many more.

2009, the East Side Gallery was painted again - because in the meantime many colours faded. The "Artist Initiative East Side Gallery e.V." has great additional information as well as a listing of each artist.

The visit to the East Side Gallery is a must for each visitor to Berlin.
